We now have all 4 seatbelts fitted. Test driving was going well but came to an abrupt halt when we noticed fluid coming out of the automatic gearbox. The car was really running well and I was confident of getting 100 miles on her quickly. We had to remove the engine and gearbox and get it over to the rebuilders for checking out. Turns out the seal behind the torque converter had failed and if you look closely at the photo, you can see the spring part of the seal looking decidedly the worst for wear.

Delighted to report that the registration process has begun. As soon as we have that, we can get a few delivery miles on her. Meanwhile, the footwell carpets have been fitted and the carb plenum modified for triple carbs. That is now with the powder coaters.

Work coming on at a fair pace now and we have lots of the smaller jobs completed. There are a number of shots of the interior of the car which shows what remarkable condition the car is in. We have even used as much of the original underlay/sound deadener as possible. The exhaust is fitted but we don't have the correct mounts for the resonators (different for a 2+2). They will be here next week so that job can be put to bed. The door cards are being fitted and you can see the oft (always) missing countersunk screws that go under the chrome strip in place. The new Hardi fuel pump with new mounts has also been fitted.

More work completed with the new exhaust manifold painted (just waiting for the rear one now!). The chrome sill finisher strips have been fitted along with the gutter chromes and RHS mirror. The water pump is in and that elusive kick down bracket fitted! We had to modify the lower shaft to accept an additional connecting rod by welding on another lug. Carbs are fitted properly and now waiting firing up for final testing.

The bonnet is now built up with the upgraded headlights and wiring mods. The additional white wire in the plug is for the lead that goes straight to the battery and feeds the two relays that power the headlights direct. This gives a significant improvement to the brightness of the lights. The chrome is all fitted and the dampers, grill and heater intake plenum have been delivered to the painters.

Lots of smaller jobs have been finished now and the brake pipe and loom runs have been strapped into position. The cooling fans have been rebuilt and tested. We have also fitted the hi torque starter motor. Phil turned up on Friday to carry on the trim work. It is amazing how much more trim there is in a 2+2!

The engine and gearbox are now fitted. A lot of preparation work had to be completed prior to installation which included making sure the bolt holes were clear for the torsion bar reaction plate and fitting new UJs to the propshaft. Unfortunately, the propshaft was deemed scrap as there was some damage to one of the yokes which meant that the bearing cap would never fit properly. The engine stabliser lower link had to be replaced with polybush and the engine bay checked to ensure it was clean and ready.

Leon has been busy and the new loom is installed, rear axle fitted, instruments cleaned and centre dash in place. The frames and engine have been degreased so it looks quite bright in there now! We removed a leaking core plug and found it was pretty sludgy inside the block. Following consultation with the owner, we have decided that the best course of action is to rebuild the engine.

The end of another busy week! The strip down of the rear axle and front suspension of the Blue S2 2+2 (CG) is complete and all the components have been broken down and delivered to their respective platers/powdercoaters. Interesting points to note this week is the broken UJ on the driveshaft. The bearing had collapsed and the yoke then smashed the cup that contained the rollers. This in turn damaged the driveshaft yoke! Luckily we have a good second hand one to replace it with. The hub carriers are always full of 50 year old grease and is always delightful to clean off. Prior to delivering the oil covered diff unit to our reconditioners, he insists that we clean them first. Horrible job!

The car is now painted and looks fantastic. All the dents and holes that we didn't want (ie side repeaters) are welded up and we should hopefully get the car back next week. The paintshop have been a bit lively so the car will have to wait it's turn in the queue. Still, a nice workshop ornament to have around now!

Now ready for the paintshop to collect on Monday. Found a mouse nest in the propshaft area - just amazing how much they can drag into a small space. The following photos are really for us to use when the car goes back together but also shows how original the car is. The inspection panels on the rear bulkhead have never been removed. Some of the bodges people carry out still amaze and shock us. The short pipe that has been cut along its' length is the connector between the fuel filler and the tank. It was missing the jubilee clips and was wrapped in electrial insulation tape! The pipe from the fuel tank was cust and joined with a jubiliee clip and some rubber pipe. Really dangerous. Removing the roof lining revealed a date stamp. More proof of the originality. The headlight scoops were removed revealing all the original wiring and P clips.

The brief is to repaint the car in the original colour, retrim and commission. A real treat to be working on such an original car - it hasn't even been painted since it left the factory. It is off to the paintshop on Monday.
