A while back we had the gearbox rebuilt. The customer found it hard to get into second gear from third so we had to strip it down again and investigate the problem. The builder had put it together with too much endfloat in the layshaft and the wrong size (too thick) bearing retaining ring. One of the needle roller bearing retainers was also cracked. Now we have rebuilt it, we can test it next week. While it was stripped, we replaced the clutch fork, shaft and bushes along with new seals front and rear. The rear gearbox mount rubber also needed changing.

The engine runs really well and we just have the final adjustments to make to the carbs and timing. The chromework is starting to go back on the car and the gutter chromes are in place. The interior is about 90% complete and both doors are built. We pick up the windscreen next week so that should be fitted on Friday.

The first few photos show the level of detail we go to when replacing components. The original screws and cup washers are always used if possible but not before a quick clean. These are the self tappers that hold the hinge and rear hatch covers in place. You can see the chrome trim strips before they were cleaned and after. A lot of the trim is now in place with all the front carpet fitted along with the centre console. A lot of time was spent trying to get the engine started but we have a fault somewhere and we have no spark......yet. The electrics all check out and all we need to do is get her running in order to move the project on a long way.

The gearbox rubbers were replaced along with new heatshields. The heated rear screen is in place along with the lower chrome only (the upper is damaged so we have had to order a new one). The newly chromed rear bumper is on and we have used a S1 thin bumper rubber that is tight all the way round so that is a good fit. The RHS instrument panel is now bolted down and the new choke and speed cable fitted (note that the speedo was refurbished in Hollywood in 1973).

The car is coming together with a lot of the horrible jobs being completed. The drivers door is built and the new front crankshaft seal fitted. This meant dropping the sump that had been caked in oil for the past goodness knows how many years. While we were there, we removed a big end shell. Fantastic condition! Really pleased.

First 2 pictures are of why E Types overheat if not maintained properly. Removal of one of the core plugs revealed it was pretty clogged up with rust and scale. Nothing a good blast and flush through can't cure though. The door components are laid out and ready for installation following a clean and grease. The 2 photos of a rubber seal show that the factory cut the window frame channel rubber to clear the weld in the top rear corner. Failure to do this will mean that the channel will be too small for the window to fit properly.

The car is coming along nicely with both rear quarter lights fitted, the vacuum pipes and LHS mudguard. This car is so original and in good condition (as evidenced by the 4 screws that secure the quarter light pillars show). The door locks have been stripped (the original grease just turns to a sticky mush), rebuilt and finally fitted to the car. Very satisfying job.

Picked up the car today following a bare metal respray. Looks fantastic and we could have sold it a dozen times on the way back to the workshop. Lovely to see an E Type in its original colour of Old English White as there aren't many around.

The car is now in primer and ready for painting in the next few days. Murray was given the good job of cleaning underneath the bonnet. Made a good job of it too! Good to see the factory marks on the rear hatch - we have decided not to paint over them. The car will be repainted in the original colour of Old English White and the paint match to the original is excellent.

We took a trip out to the paintshop to deliver bonnet shims and while we were there, took some photos of the boot area where the petrol tank normally sits. They had to remove it in order to complete the welding of the rear quarter panel. As you can see, dirty but sound and no accident damage evident.

Fitted the new fuel pump and a good set of carbs. We now had fuel but still no starting. A quick check of the distributor cap revealed that although Number 1 lead was in the correct place, none of the others were! With that rectified, the engine burst into life and sounds really strong. Great news.
With the headlight scoops removed, we proved that the bonnet is the original one fitted by the factory (we weren't sure as the paint finish was different to the body). It was confirmed by the factory mark on the inside of the scoop - that number is the body number stamped on the chassis plate.

Work continues with the side chromes, rear bumper and rear lights removed. The last part of the Air Conditioning was taken off so the car is now ready for conversion to RHD. Interesting to see on the rear light extension chrome a rubber (same as the over rider type) was fitted to the LHS. Never seen that before but it does make sense. No surprises (apart from how original and solid the car is). The luggage boards were removed to reveal the fuel tank. Again, great, original condition with the sound deadening still in position.

Car delivered this morning and we were quickly all over it. Windscreen chrome and screen removed, doors stripped, aircon compressor and in car blower taken out. Rubbers scraped off, rear quarter lights off and seats removed. What a car! No rust found yet and everything is coming undone easily - even the seat mounts are in excellent condition.

Next on the list is a rust free and complete white S2 FHC. Brief for this car is to repaint in White (original colour), commission and convert to RHD. We needed to carry out a compression test before the strip commences (car is due to be delivered to the paint shop on the 8th December). We couldn't turn the engine over. It turned out a new ignition switch had been fitted and incorrectly wired. With that sorted, the compression test proved that the engine is fine.
