The car was duly collected yesterday by the new owners. A phone call today confirmed that the car works really well with no major niggles to sort out. They are really happy with the car and we are delighted with the results. The car handles superbly and after a running in period, it will get better and better.
We had a bit of a last minute scare with the clutch. We couldn't bleed out all the air. Sunday morning, 30 minutes before they were due to arrive, we managed to solve the problem. Phew! Talk about Last Minute Dot Com.....

The car will be collected on Sunday by the new Owners so we have been blowing out the cobwebs today. The new fuel pump seems to have developed an intermittent fault so we will have to swap it out. Apart from that, it will be taken over to the paint shop on Friday for a final polish to ensure she looks her best!

Horns now work (turned out to be a broken down insulation in the horn push which was shorting out to earth). A quick strip down of the indicator stalk soon cured that! The pictures show the car outside having been driven for the first time in ages. We left the car on 'soak test'. This is where we leave it running for half an hour or so to ensure it doesn't overheat and the fans kick in at the right time.

Still only has a few jobs to complete! The horns have stopped working, there are 2 screws to fit to the radiator shield and the number plate light doesn't work. The radio console was fitted and the oil pressure sender changed so we now register a healthy oil pressure.

We are now awaiting a break in the weather so we can deliver the car to Hutsons to have the hood fitted but in the meantime we finished off a few small jobs. Things like the fittings for the seats, the seatbelts, radiator mesh and under dash harduras are now in place. The devil is in the detail on projects like this and the final5% seems to occupy 90% of the build time!

Finally, we picked up the hood frame front panel from the platers - they have dipped it and killed the rust. It was straight over to the powder coaters for painting prior to fitting back onto the car. We also sorted out the plenum for the carbs - going from twin carbs to triple means that the mounts have to be moved further apart in order to fit it to the triple intake.

Phil delivered the centre console for the Red OTS earlier on and that is now in position. We have to take it out again though as we need to fit the rubber gaitor in the handbrake aperture. The seats look great and the trim is now complete (just a few small adjustments to make). The car is booked in for the hood to be fitted over the Christmas break. (It has to be hand made from scratch so will take a little longer than buying one off the shelf).

The hoodframe was stripped and delivered to the Powder Coaters today - ready for blasting and painting in the correct colour. When it is returned, it will be fitted to the car prior to the new hood being fitted. It takes time to fit the frame properly prior to the canvas being installed.
Lots of small jobs were also completed; 'P' clip screwed in place for the rear brake pipe, more trim pieces glued in place (note that we have some repositioning to do before we are happy with the trim fit), dashtop top in place but needs bolting into final position.

The indicator switch failed testing - everything worked ok until you moved the horn stalk. A quick check revealed the condition of the contacts. A stripdown, clean and re-grease soon cured that! Underfelt now in position in the footwells and we now have the front bumper in place. Just final adjustments to make.
Started the trimming with the LHS sill vinyl laid in.

Wiring sorted out and windscreen fitted. Amazing how much difference it makes to the appearance of the car. Tomorrow Bill will be coming back to fit the chromes. Transmission cover fitted (with the sound deadening foam) and screwed and taped into position (the tape is to help reduce the heat ingress into the car).
Headlamp pods built and ready for fitting. Just waiting for the quad optic headlights so we can wire the side lights into the headlamps.
Bootlid adjusted - just look at those gaps!

Lots of small jobs completed today. Propshaft to diff connected, brake pads fitted, vacuum pipes to servo and LHS under tray and mudshield now in place. The alternator and horn relays are now bolted up and the handbrake cable connected (just need the clevis and pin to finalise). We use a roofing PVC instead of the normal rubber strip to act as the seal between the bonnet and mudguard - nothing else seems to last!
Ordered the new exhaust - the owner has gone for the big bore option with stainless steel manifolds - good choice with this Stage 2 engine.

Spent the day working on the bonnet. Pleased to say that it is now shimmed and now needs the final adjusting. Door and boot lid gaps are good but we are going to close the gap on the LHS door where it meets the B post by moving the door backwards a small amount.

New diff cleaned and painted in BondaPrima. Has to be stripped and checked yet but it is much easier handling a clean unit - it will be given another coat when it comes back from the re-conditioners.
The rest of the bonnet under panels were also given a coat of BondaPrima - it will kill any residual rust in the metalwork.
Started building up some of the sub components and the first cooling fan motor has been put back together. Looks good and we are now coming to the end of the clean up stage of the restoration.

The diff was finally stripped down as far as we need to take it. The components were put into the wash tank for degreasing prior to going off to the rebuilder.
We took the opportunity, now that the dirty work is done, to give the tools and workshop a good clean. Looks much better now!
Next week we will deliver the body and bonnet panels to the painter. The axle, diff and gearbox will go off to the guys who will strip, check and rebuild them leaving us to work on the instruments and electrical components. Good times.

Spoke to the powder coaters today who said that if I got the bits over to them in the next couple of days, they might be able to get them finished before Christmas. Later on saw me running around gathering the parts and stripping out components in readiness. Tomorow we'll focus on stripping out the rear axle and putting together the list of parts to be delivered. Frantic activity but worth it!

Lots of stripping going on today. The bonnet was broken down to its constituent components and the under panels taken over for chemical stripping. The LHS door was taken apart and found to be rust free.
The last photo is of a boot hinge (thanks Tony!). As can be seen, some of the springs are broken so we will replace them all as a matter of course. Not a pleasant job!

4th December 2013
Fuel tank removed and found it had a shovel full of sand inside. The tank sump was completely blocked as can be seen from the first photo. The second photo shows how much sand was in the bottom of the tank. We were told this was a 'desert car' but this is ridiculous! Good job we were going to rebuild the engine, fit new carbs and fuel pump!
The 4th and 5th photos show how the factory modifed the body in order to fit one of the upper bolts for steering column mount. They simply hit the lower part of the panel with a large hammer. Dependant on what configuration the car was to be (LHD or RHD) the required panel was modified. As we are converting this car, we will have to ensure the mounting fits prior to the car going into paint.
Other jobs today were to strip, rebuild and convert a wiper motor from LHD to RHD. All was going well until we came to carry out the conversion. Normally you achieve this by taking a link out of the gear wheel and repositioning it 180 degrees. As can be seen in the last photo, the gear wheel on the left doesn't have the required holes required to reposition the link! Oh well, we'll fix that tomorrow.
Finally, we spoke to the body shop and arranged to deliver the body the week after next while the engine goes to the reconditioner a week today.

Took the engine frames over for blasting and etch priming. The front bulkhead is now completely bare and tomorrow will see the handbrake and boot area stripped. The third photo was taken inside the bulkhead and shows one of the clamp for the washer bottle pipes (never seen these before!).
2nd December 2013
On target for delivering tub to painters next week having stripped the front frames down. Tomorrow we'll continue stripping the bulkhead out - wiper rack and transfer pipes for the vacuum and water. Then we'll turn our attention to the boot and remove the tank. Hopefully the major components will all be with their respective specialist companies for rebuilding before Christmas.
29th November 2013
Rear axle removed and some minor parts removed. New diff arrived (this is part of the upgrade package the owner has asked for). The chassis rails are in great condition - the same can't be said for the prop shaft UJs!
Next week will see the car completely stripped then the restoration begins in earnest.

28th November 2013
:Lots of components removed today including the front anti roll bar, upper wishbones, radius arm mounts etc. Separating the front radius arm mount from the body is usually difficult and we do this by banging hardwood wooden wedges between the body and the mounting. Left to their own devices, they usually separate after a few hours. These were easy as they had been greased prior to assembly.
The rear axle is now ready for removal and it will be all hands to the pumps tomorrow to get it out ready for stripping.

26th November 2013
Busy day today and removed the steering rack and finally, the engine. Everything went smoothly and all the nuts and bolts came apart easily. Next job is the rear axle.
25th November 2013
The car continues to get lighter with the removal of the shock absorbers and front hubs. Tomorrow should see the engine removed. Time spent on the phone discussing details with the paint shop and we agreed that the tub will be transported over to the painters before Christmas.
22nd November 2013
More preparation on getting the engine out. The exhaust was removed and the torsion bar reaction plate bolts all loosened off. Interesting to note the bolts in the second picture - hard to believe they are nearly 50 years old!
Full workshop today as the owner came over to look at progress and also discuss some sensible upgrades.

21st November 2013
The disassembly continues and we now have all the shields removed from underneath now. Everything plastered in oil so everything had to be cleaned up afterwards.
The photos below mainly are for reference purposes but serve to show how E Types were put together at the factory.

20th November 2013
Strip down continues and it is apparent that the front oil seal has been leaking for some time - there's oil everywhere underneath the car! Still, helps to rustproof it I suppose.
Engine number confirmed as matching but interesting to see the stamp is above the oil filter housing and not on the flange where the bell housing attaches.
The first picture shows the top of the RHS sill. We were concerned that we couldn't see the factory spot welds - turns out they were hidden beneath layers of protective paint.
Not too much work to be done now in order to get the engine and gearbox out.

19th November 2013
The car is back on the ramp ready for engine and rear axle removal - time to get greasy! Phil the Painter turned up as promised to look at the car and to price up the bodywork and spraying.
18th November 2013
More stripdown carried out. Good news is that the major components all look sound (heater box solid etc). Engine frames also appear rust free but we wont know until they have been blasted.
Painter coming over tomorrow night to assess the work required - we would like the tub out of the workshop before Christmas.
Tomorrow we'll move it onto the ramp in preparation for the engine removal.

15th November 2013
We were able to confirm the matching numbers gearbox against the data plate with the transmission cover removed. While working in that area, we found factory fit high density foam glued to the sides of the tunnel. Never seen that before!
14th November 2013
Still coming apart and the photographs show how good the structure of the tub is. First photo is of the boot side trim. The squares of tape showing where the screws are that secure it. I was never sure where the factory put them until now!
The boot floor is as good as it gets and the entire boot area is in similar condition.
Carried on stripping the glue and old sponge from the cabin area - progress being made as can be seen in the final shot.
The suspension was tightened down on the FHC and the car can be handed over next week.

13th November 2013
Stripped out the dash and started cleaning up the floor pan. So far, no rust found! The bonnet support frame might need to be replaced as there is a dent in one of the tubes - no big deal and it is cosmetic only but it will be changed as a matter of course.
We need to get the tub stripped and ready for the painters so there is a lot of work to be getting on with!

11th November 2013
The hood and RHS door were removed along with the trim from the floor, sill and A Post. One photo was taken inside the B Post cavity - great to see it is rust free and solid. So far, no rust has been discovered.
The rear hood wood was removed and everything in that area was solid. (Normally water collects here and the wood keeps everything damp causing serious issues).
Finally, it looks as if Dave had a hand in building the car in the factory - he wrote his name on the rear bulkhead.
7th November 2013
Bonnet strip down continuing. The bonnet (which won't be used on the car) is a real mixture. It is a Series 1.5 Centre, Wings and underpanels with a Series 2 lower valance and diaphragms.
6th November 2013
Ordered parts to convert to RHD.
4th November 2013
Started work on the car! Stripped down the RHS door and you can see from the picture taken of the inside (last shot), there is no rust evident. Amazing condition!
22nd August 2013
We have been looking for a bonnet for a few months now and we were finally offered one that met our criteria - rust free. Only trouble was, it was located in North Yorkshire. Guess what I did today!
22nd July 2013
The yellow OTS was put on to the ramp and for the first time we were able to get underneath it. Absolutely solid and straight! Unbelievable condition structurally.
13th May 2013
Changed the headlights and rear light lenses on the yellow OTS for European spec ready for the MOT and started on the seal in between the top of the hood and windscreen. Finally, a wash and quick polish and it is looking a lot smarter already.
10th May 2013
Spent the day on the road down to Southampton docks to collect a Series 2 drophead. No problems and really easy to navigate around the red tape. Within 30 minutes, we were on our way with the car on the trailer.
Having had a quick look around it, it is incredible how solid it all is. If we don't sell it quickly, we'll probably keep it as our next candidate for stripping and rebuilding.
